CREATION OF DATTATREYA

The sage Narada went to the Goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati, saying that Anasuya, wife of Atri, was the most virtuous woman in any of the worlds.

The Goddesses sent their husbands, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva to test the piety of this women. Anasuya washed her husband’s feet and then sprinkled the Gods, who were disguised as Brahmins, with this water. They were turned into babes. The three Gods deprived of the power to return to their original form, were trapped at her hermitage. Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati came in search of their husbands, but she said she had some claim as she had nursed them so long.

The Gods agreed to create a combined form with three heads and six arms if she released them. This three headed divinity was named Dattatreya. The Central head represents Vishnu, the right head represents Shiva and the other Brahma. The dogs which are depicted with Dattatreya represent the perfect devotees, faithful to their master.

And Guru Dattatreya is the archetypal Guru, that is, He is the prototype or original model form which all gurus emerge. He is the Guru principle. As the Adi Guru, He has incarnated many times to guide mankind. He came as the ten great Primordial Masters. From Janaka through to Sai Nath, this great principle has incarnated to give form to God’s love for mankind, returning again and again to correct our mistakes and bring us back to a God-centered life.

The patience and love of the true guru is clearly illustrated in Shri Dattatreya’s repeated, preserving, incarnating guidance. It is Guru Dattatreya who leads mankind across the Void, bringing us from the treacherous oceans of illusion to the safety of the far shore where Shri Mataji, as Shri Durga, waits for us with outstretched arms! Lord Dattatreya had only one job to do, to establish our dharma, so that we could evolve. Each of his manifestations had only this to do.

Lord Dattatreya himself is the essence and innocence of Shri Brahmadeva, Shri Vishnu and Shri Shiva. He is the integration of all the three Gunas, and above all is innocence itself. One is constantly reminded of Shri Mataji’s emphasis on the first, and most important aspect of the Guru, Shri Ganesha. Innocence is the wellspring of the guru of wisdom. In his manifest forms, as Confucius, Zarathustra, Lao Tze, Nanaka, Moses, Abraham and Muhammad, Lord Dattatreya has been the foundation of great religions, preserving man’s dharma.

Shri Mataji has explained, “Adi Guru Dattatreya worshipped Mother along the banks of the River Tamasa. Tamasa is the same as your Thames. And He Himself came and worshipped here…. in this great country of Shiva, of the Spirit.

Swadisthana, which moves around the void

(Swadisthana chakra shown by Shri Moses )
" The right side looks after our intelligence, thinking etc. the left side looks after our emotional side. I will tell you about one Chakra, which is Swadisthana, which moves around the void. This is the one, which is responsible for producing or manufacturing the aortic plexus that's only in the physical side. When we think the energy we use in our thinking is used up. We are using our brain all the time. What is replacing it is this center. You know the brain is made of fat cells. This center converts the fat of the stomach for the use of the brain and that how those who think too much go into imbalances. Futuristic people are planning all the time. The poor center which has to do other jobs like looking after liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, intestines, so with a right-sided futuristic person the first problem can come is with the liver. In the medical science I don't think they have much knowledge about the liver. It is a very important organ in the body…."(to be continued through next issue of. ..Did you know.) (Doctor's Conference, Meridian Hotel, Delhi, 25.03.93)

".. The function of the liver is to absorb all the poison of the body and convert it into heat, which passes through the blood stream when you start thinking, too much you neglect your liver and then the poor thing does not know how to do this job. So the whole is saturated in the stomach. The person has heat here, then the heat starts passing upwards through the right heart. It creates problem and that problem is called Asthma. Then this heat passes into the throat, which creates a kind of a cold where you will sneeze twenty times in the morning. There are two types of liver. One is lethargic liver and the other is overactive liver. I am talking of the over active liver, where a person develops cold, sneezing, temper, anger, acidity and tension. Then this heat passes over and can go to the heart at a very young age. Supposing there are boys who are playing tennis or exercise of a vigorous nature and drinking this might affect and can cause a massive heart attack at a very young age. The same heat when it passes to the throat we develop throat trouble, hoarseness etc. when it moves down to your pancreas then the poor pancreas is also suffering because it has no energy from the center. Then a person develops diabetes. Too much of thinking gives diabetes. People think too much, sugar gives diabetes. In Maharashtra people drink tea where sugar is so much that the spoon stand up. Nobody gets diabetes because they are villagers, living simple lives, not thinking of tomorrow, how to do this or that. Only the people lives simple, not thinking of tomorrow, how to do this or that. Only the people who are sitting on their seats, planning thinking, worrying gets diabetes.

"The third thing which is even more dangerous is the speed. Nowadays life is so funny that it cannot be congenial to the working of the Spirit. What happens in the morning is that one reads the newspapers, horrible news, Bombay blast, etc., the spleen start wobbling. Then you don't eat your breakfast properly. You rush to work, cursing the people on the way because of the traffic jam. This craziness makes it vulnerable to blood cancer. The spleen does not know how to react to this craziness. Then a shock will happen on the left side because you are working on the right side and then it fails. The connection with the whole is lost. The brain cannot control anymore. Then this trouble of leukemia comes in. Then it goes to kidney. You cannot pass urine. Then he is put on dialysis and poor man dies bankrupt. Dialysis has not cured anyone so far. It just makes them live longer and longer. Sometimes you don't feel hungry because of the liver plus you feel constipated. Constipation can be of the worst kind where all their lives they have to take enemas. These are the common diseases faced by the over active people.

Protection from false gurus

Sahaja Yogi: How do we protect ourselves from the clutches of the false gurus?

H.H.Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi: Why did you have to go to a false guru? (Shri Mataji laughs) You tell me first, why did you go to a false guru? What attracted you to go to the false guru? How did you go there? You must ask yourself this first. Then you will realise that you ignored the evils of that false guru. That is what you didn’t protect yourself from. Now, in the past I have already given lectures on false gurus where I have clearly talked about their evildoings and how they take one for a ride. It is their business to entrap you all. There are different types of business which they adopt. Out of that, gurus also have a business to entrap you and you are trapped. From this, one must realise which trap we have fallen into. We have filled our brains with the badhas (negativities) of the false gurus. Now if you can tell me any of those badhas, then I can tell you…..

SahajaYogis: inaudible, two or three voices speaking together.

Shri Mataji: Now if you know one or two of these badhas, you let me know. The false gurus’ badhas. Now what do these badhas actually do? First they focus their attention on your pocket. (laughter)Isn’t it? As they start doing this, then you must understand that their intentions are different. But it is all on the gross level. On the subtler level, in fact, there are many who wouldn’t want to entrap you, but they would try to project their own importance. And for this reason they become gurus. It is like this, that one projects his importance. So you must watch all this and be critical about it. Then it will forsake you. But most of the people absorb their badhas, their ego, their anger, their physical health and many more aspects that you absorb from the guru. Like these gurus, when they fall sick, their shadow starts reflecting within you.

For this reason, you must analyse yourself and look at yourself, that, what have I received from this guru? This is very important. Then when there is a cleansing of yourself, you will see that it benefits you to a great extent. Why did you go to a guru when you were seeking for your own spiritual ascent? You went to a guru to know him but you were in turn entrapped. This guru is such a guru, and you yourself should know how to protect yourself from him. You should stay away from them. I had been to many such gurus just to see them and what they do, and how they tempt and attract people. And with what they entrap people.

So the first thing I saw was that these people find your own weaknesses, that what weakness you have. If this doesn’t work then they put badhas into you. The badhas are of various types. Out of these badhas you must first learn to detect what type of badhas he has put into you that you are unable to get rid of. The greatest badha that they put into you is FEAR. It keeps on frightening you, that ‘if you leave me, such and such thing will happen to you.’ This type of fear creeps within you. It doesn’t have much strength in it. But it keeps on frightening you. When this fear comes, you must say to it, ‘yes, I know it’. With this fear the human beings keep on going round and round the guru. For that Shri Krishna is there, who drives out this fear from everyone.

Position in Human body :

QUALITY

The Void is the center of our own mastery. As the Kundalini energy enlightens this area we become our own Guru. The word Guru means weight or gravity, and this grounded state is

one of the primary ways that we remain in balance in the midst of our turbulent existence. When the Kundalini rises and fills the Void, our Attention is led out of the confusion and illusion, and into the awareness of the higher Reality. In this way we can take control of our own evolution without relying on external forces, eventually our own introspection will provide the answers and keys during our meditation. In a lot of cases the key will be to recognize a solution to our problem resented to us externally, but as we become our own master we are able to discern the right from wrong, the Truth from fiction.

The other side of this coin is, of course, the principle of the disciple. It is as important for us to recognize Truth in a humble and open minded way as it is to give advice with a gravity of a Master. The greatest Masters throughout the ages have been the most humble disciples of God. In this way they surrender their ego to the Divine and are able to teach with absolute authority, even when directly challenging the established wisdom of the time. Since the Void is directly connected with the Nabhi Chakra, it is no coincidence that the principle of Dharma is a fundamental

aspect of this area. All of the great Masters and Prophets who have taken their birth on the earth to guide us, have made Dharma (or righteous conduct) a key tenet of their teachings. We can only become better beings by not abusing ourselves or debasing others; in other words, by living properly and in accordance with the laws of nature.

TRADITION

All of the great Prophets who have come to act as role models for the human race and to give knowledge of the higher Reality are associated with the Void. The primordial Deity is Shri Adi

Guru, and the great Prophets such as Abraham, Moses, Lao-Tse, Janaka, Guru Nanak, Mohammed Sahib, Sai Nath of Shirdi, Zaratustra, Confusius and Socrates are simply embodiments

of this Primordial Master. It is they who have taught us the ways of righteous living that maintain codes of conduct by which anarchy is avoided. The disciple principle also resides within us in this area, and this principle has been represented on the earth as Luv and Kush (the children of Shri Rama and Shri Sita), as Markendaya, as Adi Shankaracharya, David, John the Baptist, Buddham, Mahavira, Kabir, Michaelangelo, Kalil Gibran, William Shakespeare, William Blake and others.

The role models or “beacons to the path” have taken birth all over the world. In a lot of cases they have had to reincarnate specifically to undo the wrong done by their earlier followers who have begun to stray from the teachings. For example Mohammed Sahib came onto the earth to teach Dharma to a barbaric peoples of the time, who in turn tortured his life. As a result, out of disgust, he vowed that “this is the last time a Prophet will come.” But when he saw how his compassion

was thrown to the dogs he incarnated as Guru Nanak to teach Hindu-Muslim unity. Nowadays of course his own followers are haters of Muslims and vice versa. In a similar way Shri Adi Shankaracharya returned as Kabir to try and lead his followers away from ritualism and idol worship which they started practicing so indiscriminately.

GROSS PHYSICAL ASPECT

The Void is the gap between the Kundalini and the vagus nerve of the parasympathetic system. It represents all space and time from the beginning of creation to the peak of our evolution in human awareness. It is the vacuum which separates our awareness from the Absolute while we are still in the unen-lightened state. The Void is actually created by the outermost circular movement of the Swadisthana around the Nabhi Charka, and it contains the two centers relating to the Sun (Surya) and Moon (Chandra).

CONDITION OF THE VOID

We can tell when we are disturbing the Guru principle within us by the upset to our digestive system. This can manifest as nausea or any other symptoms emanating from the stomach area. If for instance we are witness to any Adharmic activity or indulge in abuse of our physical or subtle system we can easily determine the effect on our system by the feeling that we experience in this area. Nervous tension in our stomach or butterflies before an exam or test are simply expressions of our Mastery Principle being challenged.
Similarly we are able to discern false teachings from Truth by responding to the condition of the Void. The combination of vibratorial awareness and signals from our Void area can be a powerful pointer to the legitimacy of any practice whether it be spiritual or material. We learn to become atuned to our subtle system in this way and eventually can respond rapidly to avoid that which will do us harm and to open up towards that which will be of benefit to our being. The Guru principle within us is a very powerful force for our benevolence, but we must learn to recognize the signals.

CLEARING THE VOID

Using the Elements:

  • Footsoak in a bowl of hot water with salt in it.

  • Using a candle around the Void area.

Affirmations:

  • Mother, I am my own Master.

  • Mother, You are my Guru.

General Advice from Shri Mataji:

  • Left hand towards the photo, right hand on Void.

  • Shoe-beating.

  • Drinking salt water.

  • Self-discipline (e.g. getting up early to meditate)
